SU SGA Accepting Applications for Eighth Annual 'Big Event'

SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University students unite to help the community during the eighth annual Big Event community cleanup day, sponsored by the Student Government Association Saturday, April 14.

During the community service project, some 500 SU students help campus neighbors with household chores such as raking leaves, cleaning attics, and painting. Properties surrounding SU are eligible. The deadline for applications is Monday, April 2.

“The Big Event is a chance for students to connect with the residents of Salisbury and let them know that they mean a lot to the University community,” said Katherine Mooney, SGA vice president of external affairs. “The community does so much for SU, and this is just our way of saying, ‘thank you.’ It is also important that we get to know our neighbors and they get to know us because we can learn a lot from each other. Salisbury is our home too, and we want it to be as nice as it can be.”

”The Big Event is a day where students make a positive impact and difference for the community through our magnanimous gestures,” said Shanita Williams, SGA vice president of university affairs.

For project request forms, visit the SGA website, http://www.salisbury.edu/campusgov/sga and click the “Community Application” link. Requests for forms also may be e-mailed to sgavpofea@gulls.salisbury.edu.

City Council to Hold Four Election Redistricting Forums

PUBLIC NOTICE
City Council to Hold Four Election Redistricting Forums
The Salisbury City Council invites members of the public to participate in four open forums it will
hold for the purpose of obtaining public input on election redistricting. Redrawing lines of voting
districts is considered following the release of population and demographic figures from each U.S.
Census, the last being held in 2010.
The times and locations are listed below:

March 13, 2012 (Tuesday) Faith Baptist Church 30505 Dagsboro Rd. 6:30pm – 8:00pm

March 20, 2012 (Tuesday) Parkway Church of God Rt. 50 & 600 Edison St. 6:30pm – 8:00pm

March 27, 2012 (Tuesday) Harvest Baptist Church 119 South Blvd. 6:30pm – 8:00pm

April 2, 2012 (Monday) Government Office Bldg.Council Chambers
125 N. Division St. 12:30pm – 2:00pm

Districts must be drawn in compliance with the Voting Rights Act Section 2 and in consideration of a number of factors, such as compactness,
contiguity, respect for “communities of interest” and others. Salisbury also operates its elections under a court consent order of the late 1980s, which created the current two-district system.
A base map showing the areas of the city with majority-black (yellow) and majority-white census blocks (green) is found on the City’s website, www.ci.salisbury.md.us, under “Latest News.”
That section also contains three plans advanced by the mayor.

The city council is awaiting public input on these and any other suggestions or plans the public may advance before deliberating on final district lines to be drawn.

Input and questions may also be directed to the entire council via email to
ALLCityCouncilMembers@ci.salisbury.md.us, or by calling the Office of the City Clerk, (410)
548-3140.
