SU SGA 'Big Event' Application Deadline Apr. 1

Thursday, March 17, 2011

SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University students unite to help the community during their seventh annual Big Event community cleanup day, sponsored by the Student Government Association Saturday, April 16.

During the community service project, hundreds of SU students help University neighbors with household chores such as raking leaves, cleaning attics and painting. Properties surrounding the SU campus are eligible. The deadline for applications is Friday, April 1.

“The Big Event lets the community know that we are here to help them,” said Emma Lewis, SGA vice president of University affairs. “Our neighbors do so much for SU, and this is our way of saying ‘thank you.’ Salisbury is our home, too, and we want it to be as nice as it can be.”

In the past, students have performed painting and maintenance projects at county and municipal recreation areas in addition to assisting with yard work, window washing and painting at private residences.

Community Message has been issued by the Salisbury Police Dept.

Salisbury Police Department announces 8 week Citizens' Police Academy starting March 2nd.

The Salisbury Police Department invites you to attend the Citizen’s Police Academy.  This academy will be open to anyone living or working in the city.

With public support and understanding so essential to the Law Enforcement Administration the Citizen’s Academy will prove to be an excellent program to bring the community and law enforcement together for common goals.

“Understanding through education” is the objective of the Citizen’s Police Academy.  This is accomplished by the exchange of information from the participants and the Law Enforcement instructors of the class.

The Academy will meet for eight(8) sessions totaling (16) hours.  The sessions will be held from Wednesday March 2 through Wednesday  April 20 from 6:30 pm until 8:30 pm. at the Salisbury Police Department Training Room.

The class size will be limited and applications will be considered on a first come first serve basis.  Each applicant must be 18 years of age and will be subject to a criminal history  check prior to being a participant.

There will be classes involving Patrol Operations, Criminal Investigations, Crime Prevention, the Tactical unit, and much more.

Participants in the program will learn about the organizational structure of the Salisbury Police Department, its mission, role and values, patrol functions, communications, criminal investigation techniques, evidence collection procedures, safe streets team, community relations/crime prevention programs, tactical unit and more.

After completing this program, citizens will have a greater appreciation of the various activities and challenges facing law enforcement officers. The Academy is an informational program only.  Attendees of the
program will have no police powers or
authority.

Applications may be picked up from and returned to the Salisbury Police Department, 699 West Salisbury Pkwy or the Mayor’s Office, 125 N. Division St., Salisbury, Md 21801 or the Neighborhood Services & Code Compliance Office 501 B E. Church Street.

Upcoming City Council Election

Dear Neighbors!

As you all know the campaign for the three Salisbury City Council seats for District Two has begun. We need to elect people who will respect our rights as voters. These people will be in charge of introducing (or failing to introduce) legislation that will affect us, the residents of Salisbury, for many years to come!

As much as we are bothered by the problems in this city we often do not act. Elections like this affect every taxpayer, every homeowner in the city and even so only about 20% of residents usually vote!

Let's be proactive! Let's go to the forums, ask the candidates some tough questions, including the one about who is financing their campaigns. Let's elect those who will work for us!

Here are the candidates, listed in alphabetical order:

Muir Boda
Terry Cohen
Joel Dixon
Orville Dryden
Bruce Ford
Laura Mitchell
Timothy Spies
Michael Tylor

You can find more info about election (including polling locations) at:
http://www.ci.salisbury.md.us/CityGovernment/Elections/tabid/86/Default.aspx

Please, if you are planning to be out of town use absentee ballot application, which you can find online. Absentee ballots must be returned by February 22nd http://www.ci.salisbury.md.us/Portals/0/Departments/City_Clerk/2011cityonlineabsapp.pdf
